Hope Vickers

When did you discern that you were called to be a pastor?

Prior to entering ordained ministry, I worked with children for many years and while directing the Children’s Ministries and Preschool at Haymount UMC in Fayetteville and attending Disciple Bible Study classes, I felt that God was calling me to be a pastor. When I protested that I was being a pas-tor to children, God very clearly made me see that in God’s eyes, we are all children and God wanted me to be a pastor to all.

What is your favorite part of being a pastor?

My favorite part of being a pastor is the people. Of course, that can also be the most difficult part, but I love the way God’s grace works in each of us and helps us do what we thought we could never do. I love being in worship services with other people and discerning God’s message for us.

Why did you want to join the staff at Wrightsville UMC?

Being part of the staff at Wrightsville UMC gives me the opportunity to work with some outstanding people and focus on specific ministry to and for individuals. I love the way each staff member is able to bring their own talents together and creatively support each other in the work of being the Unit-ed Methodist Church at Wrightsville Beach. It is truly being the Body of Christ for the world in which we live.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

My creative outlet is cooking. I like to feed people. I also like to connect people together with others of like mind. There are so many people who are willing to do their small part to make the world a better place and I love to help us find each other so together we are doing a “big thing.”

Do you have a family?

I am married to Darrell Vickers who retired from Fayetteville State Univ. where he directed the MBA program and we have 3 married children and 3 grandchildren: Angela is married to Tom Erdman and they have Grace and Andrew. Rob is married to Johna and they have Molly. Ashley is married to Matt McNeill and their “children” consist of 3 labs at the moment. Angela and her family live in Aus-tin, Texas. Rob and Johna live in Ohio, but recently bought a vacation place near us in Oak Island. Ashley and Matt live in Leland. Matt works at Computer Warriors on Eastwood Dr in Wilmington and Ashley works at Childcare Network in Wilmington. We also have a black miniature poodle named Izzy.
